Wobble and Sway

Sex, secrets, Pictionary, pineapple upside down cake, a tape rewinding and playing again upon completion, a story told parallel that creates a sense of nostalgia, relief, and emptiness, a microwave full of hot dogs and a house full of locked doors, back yard, front porch, stars to sunrise, two eyes focused squarely on red luminescent polygons representing a time of day and never looking away, distance, stir until agitated, get up, go outside, walk the neighborhood, look in the windows on a cold holiday spent in silence and solitude and wonder where the ideals have gone to, a phone call to family, a shouting match, the slow creep of regret and the behavior of an ostrich, a habit of writing letters and not sending them, a trip to the gas station to reassure oneself against Omega Man-like thoughts, a phone call made out of weakness to a person who is both eager to help and agitated by prolonged dependence, rewatch the video tape, mute the sound, a sad song left on repeat, and repeat, and repeat, and repeat, shower once, shower again when the skin crawls, take a permanent marker and write on the walls, write on the walls that it won’t ever happen again, find sleep one last time, resume the process in the morning.
