The Long Drive to Boston

Posted: June 5, 2012 in Uncategorized

The sweet taste of donuts wasn’t worth the empty, bubbling, post-donut feeling that had risen in my stomach, but I didn’t want to pull over, to delay this situation any longer. I wanted to be there already, to be where I was supposed to be.

Donuts be damned, one way or another I’ll be in Massachusetts before noon.

It’s funny to think that I’ve driven far enough that just a century or two ago, it might have taken weeks, maybe months to come as far as I have over a few days, driving hard and focused and stopping only to sleep, or fuel up at some rest stop. Fuel the truck, fuel myself. Fuel. Something better than donuts. I was craving it, but there just wasn’t any time.

I’ve been on the road so long I’m surprised this beat-up truck is still in one piece. It shakes like it won’t be for much longer, but already I’m close enough that if it did break down, it wouldn’t be a big deal. I’m determined enough and close enough and if worse comes to worse, I’ll still keep that promise to myself.

I’ll still make it to the comic convention on time.
