Latency of Being

Living a life free of mistakes and without hurting other people is a nice dream, but it happens to be just that. The more realistic avenue is one where you can make up for your transgressions, but that relies on both a relative lack of creating serious pain for others and a willingness to forgive on the other party. In many ways it practically rules out romance entirely. Modern love is basically finding somebody that you can hurt on accident, feel terrible for doing it, and having it in their heart to forgive you without breaking down entirely and changing things. Perhaps it has always been this way, but your narrator has a particular temporal bias.

Politics is equally out of the question, because in order to be effective in the eyes of anyone, you have to take a hard line on at least one issue, and the reason that they’re called issues is because they’re divisive by nature. Ideally, you should be able to hold your press conference, stand in front of the crowd, and say, “A 3% tax increase is required to help us balance our books and continue to maintain our infrastructure of irrigation and transportation.” The  crowd would then nod in genuine understanding and not complacency, go home, and rebalance their budgets. As the videos of rioting and violence will tell you, this is obviously not the case. Those that do just follow the edict risk their lives resembling those of oppressed peoples throughout history.
