Hair Tasting

The mists of the mountains settled only briefly before reaching arms up toward space, straight up and occasionally twisting into another ceiling of potential precipitation. The steel spines pocked the landscape, always in a uniform row of four, but with placement that seemed erratic at best. Some stood upright, others left long ravines where they had fallen and been dragged back to the place they came from. To the north, a hot slab of oozing rock, a soft plateau that was firm yet gave underfoot. To the south, the fallen forest, its trees laid to rest in a pile like a burial marker for the plants that had once lived so vibrantly. It was a world teetering on the brink of destruction, saved only momentarily by a young, fussy eater of a demigod.
