72 Percent of a Day

Short of breath, sweaty, and feeling particularly disgusted with himself, he resignedly slumped against the exit door of the gymnasium. The first day of his new year’s resolution was complete, and he felt like dying. Legs wobbled underneath his rounded frame as his labored breath produced vast clouds of steam. The disgusting way his wet shirt clung to his front and back was now made exponentially more intolerable as the cold January air made him feel like his nipples would freeze right off. The walk back to the car was impossible enough. The drive home past all the drive-thrus and convenience stores would be downright hellish. He sneered at the burger joint across the street. He wanted a gym somewhere farther away from temptation but noticed that wherever one was, the other was not far away. It couldn’t have been sheer coincidence. The thought of home equipment had appealed to him in that moment but he knew that the drive there and back, and maybe even the bike ride once the weather warmed up, would be significant enough to make him feel guilty. He hadn’t needed it today, but he knew it wouldn’t be long before he did.
