When there are things to be done, particularly in the field of urban sanitation and waste, a department of trained specialists and subject veterans are called in. To the average passerby, they are written off as garbage men, truck jockeys, dumpster dudes. But within their elite club, there is a hierarchy and at the same time equality. They are the Sanitation Workers of the Round Table (in the break room) and they share a bond born of seeing things no man should see other than those who discreetly discarded them at midnight when the neighbors were all asleep. Initiation into this club is harsh, often requiring a hot coffee, a pat on the back, and some mild occupational therapy. Once you’re in, however, you sit at the hero’s table, swapping battle stories and playfully ribbing the up and coming squires who eye their idols’ seats with a mixture of envy and admiration. Charging out on their hulking iron steeds, they take to the streets and clean our city of the unsavory and despoiled elements it no longer desires.
