Hold music is perhaps the most counter-intuitive thing on the planet. If it’s a song you hate, it just reminds you how much you hate being on hold. Once, I listened to “I Want You Back” for 2 hours, because somebody forgot I was there and because while I don’t value my time, I do value making a point. If it’s a song you do like, you can jam out all you like, but you know that the second you start singing, someone’s going to pick up that phone. Now your song is gone and you’re embarrassed. But something has to be there to let people know that the line isn’t dead. So what should you do? How about a party line with all the other people on hold? You can play a short disclaimer first that says that the company is not liable for anything that is said in the party, and to opt-in, you can either press 3 or wait as piano scales or something equally unoffensive is played. Just an idea, you don’t have to use it rest of the world, but it’s not bad.
