Fresh Blueberries

You’ve probably been there at some point. At a bar, in front of a movie theater, you bump into someone you once knew. A comrade in the party trenches who helped you find your way home and with whom you shared many laughs over cinema and heady conversations over the burning cherry of a cigarette. Your shock and delight at seeing this person quickly fades when you can feel – physically feel – the divide that’s grown between you. He’s addled with god only knows what substances, a little worse for wear, but carrying a torch for an idea that tumbled out of one of your mouths one night, of counterculture and rebellion in the name of a brighter world. And it’s not like you sold out, you just got different priorities. A partner, not a lover, assets, maybe even kin. Meanwhile anarchy courses through their blood as strong as ever and you find yourself shaking your head as soon as they turn to leave. Only one day it hits you that your perspective is not absolute, and in the eyes of the other party, it’s you who used to be cool.
