Ugh Believe

It warms my heart to think that today is one of those rare days when the country gathers together around televisions sets and supports a squad of athletes that many are only marginally familiar with. Questions of “Where’s that Donovan guy” and “Is Germany good?” will creep up in homes and offices around the country as we hold our breaths for probably about 97 minutes (with 30 minute bathroom rush and exhalation for halftime) as our boys, The Yanks, do their best to blast (or barely squeeze, we will accept barely squeeze) their way into the knockout stage of the World Cup. It bears mentioning that a win over Germany would be highly favorable, as Group H can be affectionately known as “Belgium & Friends.” It may just be delaying the inevitable, but an extra game for the U.S. is that much better for the sport here, and looking at the teams that have advanced through this year, it’s hard to imagine the U.S. making it through the quarterfinals (a win at the Round of 16 will lead almost inevitably to a winner between France and Argentina), but I believe that we will win.
