all just a little bit of history repeating

“Alright, alright. Remember when your parents would get some fancy new pocketputer, because they’d been dragged kicking and screaming into the latest model, and they’d just learn how to do only the stuff their old one would do?” Charlie hadn’t had that problem, but Tricia nodded, which kept Hetch’s explanation moving.

“Right. Now imagine that’s you. Reintegrating into society trying to get back up to speed, but all of your puters, your TV, hell, your car is 20, maybe 30 years past your last frame of reference. You have no idea what the hell you’re doing, and if you can figure it out, you’re still behind the curve. You feel stupid.” Charlie followed and twisted his fork through the macaroni as he listened. “So you’re not gonna buy something that makes you feel stupid. So this marketing guy, I forget who he worked for, he decides that he’s just gonna sell the old tech with the new horsepower. Looks, feels just like the old thing, nobody feels stupid, and life goes on. Things advance for a couple of decades, then right about when you’re probably going to kick the bucket anyways, the process starts over.”
