Whenever I hear a pop outside, after midnight, I always play the game – Car backfire, gunshot, or firework. In my mind, it’s gunshot 95% of the time. I never hear cars backfiring anymore, and fireworks only apply between the middle of June and the middle of August. Gotta love unregulated firework sales and people bringing products over from Mexico. But I do live in a good neighborhood, honestly, it’s just that it’s surrounded by desert. And that desert has some wildlife in it, and is accessible by car in a matter of minutes. And I’ve walked out into that desert once or twice, and the signs posted there are absolutely peppered with impacts from bullets. That’s just where we live. Gun culture is a big part of New Mexico, and a lot of that has to do with the wild west mentality, the open wilderness and expanse where you can be largely sure that the discharge of firearms is completely safe. So shoot on, you crazy diamonds. And enjoy your beers. Just don’t get in trouble and don’t hurt nobody.
