We, Once Us

Famed BBC Radio DJ John Peel once picked his favorite record of all time, something that was no small feat for such a person. We’re talking about a man who not only made spinning records on the radio his career for decades, but who owned a veritable vault of albums at his private home. The man lived for listening to music, and when asked, he produced a song almost effortlessly from the air. You may have heard it, you likely have not. Not only is it now decades old, but it was not written or performed by someone as renowned as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Ramones, U2, Michael Jackson, The Who, Led Zeppelin, any of those. It was just a little proto-punk song that stuck in his head the moment he heard it. An instant love. The story goes that the first time he played it on air, he immediately played it again. Sometimes you see something, hear something, feel something so strongly that it burns inside you for as long as you have life in your bones. And now that he’s gone, the song is as much for him as he was for that song.
